NEWSLETTER Issue: 6.08

HEAD'S VIEW

It is 9pm Wednesday and the school is empty and quiet. I am sitting at my desk thinking over this past year as I write these words. Wow, what a year! This evening we watched enthralled as the Year 6 girls and boys performed their ‘Jungle Book’ for the last time. It was a fantastic show and I know I am not alone in saying how proud I feel of these girls and boys who, in two days time, are going to leave us for the next chapter in their lives. We want to thank them for all that they have brought to the school; their enthusiasm, their talent and their willingness to have a go at everything put in front of them. They are fine young people and it is a privilege to know them, as it is Daisy (1HO) who moves to Corsham School and Treesa (1HO) who moves to St Mary’s School. We wish every one of our leavers and their families all the very best for the future.

We also say a huge ‘thank you’ to Andy Powell who steps down as Chair of the Governors after five years at the helm. He is respected and appreciated by all for helping to steer the school through some difficult times, with amalgamation, several changes of leadership and so on. He has done so with considerable skill and without ever forgetting the human touch. He has been very ably assisted by Lisa Pritchard who has been an excellent clerk to the governors. Lisa is also stepping aside and we thank her for all her work.

I could write a book on this year alone. I have seen so many fantastic achievements, so many people of all ages wanting to do their very best, so many talents being discovered and developed and countless acts of thoughtfulness and kindness. Well done to our children on such a good year – I only wish my reports at school had been as good as the vast majority of our children!

I cannot finish the final Head’s View of the year without mentioning the staff –every single one of them. Quite simply, they are fabulous and our children and families are very fortunate to have such a dedicated team who will do anything for the children. I can think of no higher praise than saying that if my children were this age again I would love them all to come to Newbridge Primary School. Thank you – you fully deserve that deckchair, the waves lapping at your feet and the glass of lemonade...

It is nearly time to finish and let you all enjoy these coming weeks with your families. We like to laugh at Newbridge and not a day goes by without the children telling me a joke or two. These are some of my favourites to finish the year on:

I also know for a certainty that our children at Newbridge have all these opportunities because of the absolute commitment of the staff, and we are very sad to see three members of the team leave us. They are Miss Slee who leaves us to teach at Courtney School, Kingswood, Miss Newton who leaves to teach at Christchurch School, Bradford on Avon and Mrs Rutland who takes up a post at Farrington Gurney. In their own special way each has made their mark at Newbridge and we will miss them. It is the staff leavers’ assembly tomorrow morning and they will have a send off they deserve. Our very best wishes and gratitude goes with them.

What do you call a fish with no eyes? Fsh
What do you call a deer with no eyes? No idea
What do you call a deer with no eyes and no legs? Still no idea
What do you call a call a man with a paper bag on his head? Russell
What do you call a man with a shovel? Doug
What do you call a man without a shovel? Douglas
What do you call a woman standing between two goalposts? Annette

Thanks boys and girls, you made us laugh a lot! My very best wishes to you all for a happy and relaxing break, and to Mrs Skinner who will be away from school for most of next year because she is going to have a baby. Good luck, Mrs Skinner!

YEAR 6 SATs UPDATE

The latest news we have in the SATs fiasco is that we will probably be sent the results at the end of this week. We will therefore post the results to all our Year 6 families at the beginning of next week. If there is a further delay we will send them to you as soon as we have the results in our hands. We feel very sorry that you have been kept waiting.

SCHOOL UNIFORM REMINDER ...

that there is one school uniform from this coming September and that is the new uniform. Please find attached the uniform list. Please ensure your child is properly turned out to reflect our pride in being part of Newbridge Primary School and our commitment to it. Thank you for your continued support.

CERTIFICATES OF EXCELLENCE - JULY

At the end of every month each class teacher has a very difficult decision to face. They have to choose the one person from their class to receive a Certificate of Excellence. The person they choose has to consistently be the best that he or she can be. That could be in effort and attitude, achievement, behaviour or citizenship. Sometimes it can be very difficult deciding as all of the children at Newbridge seem to work so hard and behave so well!

The people with their names here this month deserve congratulating. It is not easy to be awarded a Certificate of Excellence and they have done extremely well.

NEWSLETTER Issue: 6.07

HEAD'S VIEW
Next week will see the final newsletter for this year. It could well be a bumper edition! I would like to say 'thank you' to all our families and staff who supported the CLIC fundraising appeal last Friday. We had a lot of fun, raised over £500 for such a worthwhile charity and we also discovered yet more talent at Newbridge. When does it end?!

Year 6 SATs results
No doubt you have heard in the media that the administrators of both the Key Stage 2 and 3 tests have surpassed themselves this year. Papers and results, which were due to be returned to us by the deadline date of 8th July, have still not fully appeared. There are thousands of schools across the country that are in the same boat as us and voicing their disgust at what is little more than bungling incompetence. It seems the imperative to meet deadlines does not apply to both sides. Our children deserve better. As soon as all the results come in, we will send the information home with the children. We hope this is early next week.

Parental Questionnaire
Many thanks to our parents and carers who took the time to give us their views on how we are progressing. 102 questionnaires were returned with a total of 141 children represented and a copy of the statistical outcome is attached. All your comments have also been collated and this information provides us with very useful material for our development planning for the future. The questionnaire is overwhelmingly positive but there are also areas where we can do better. Last year’s questionnaire clearly pointed out the need for better communication about what the children are learning and how they are being taught and this is echoed in this year’s results. As a result of this feedback, we have reviewed our systems and made a number of changes. For one, I hope you appreciated the new style of report which included more data to back up the teachers’ comments and more of an emphasis on what each child is doing well and what they need to work on. Next year we are also introducing ‘Getting to Know You’ sessions for all the classes. These are half hour sessions, take place in the classrooms and give the opportunity to our parents to find out about the particular routines and expectations in each year. A full year’s calendar is coming out at the end of the first week back but I will give you the dates and times of these sessions now so that you can book them in the diary. They are: Tuesday 16th September 2.00pm: Year 1 and 2.30pm: Year 4, Wednesday 17th September 2.00pm:Year 2 and 2.30pm: Year 5, Thursday 18th September 2.00pm: Year 3 and 2.30pm: Year 6. Watch out too for a curriculum overview that will be sent out to you at the beginning of each term outlining what your child will be covering during that term and there will be more curriculum information evenings on their way too. Please book in the first one which is being held on Thursday 2nd October at 6.30pm. This will be about a number of changes we are making next year.

We will use this year's questionnaire in such a way to continue to move Newbridge Primary on to greater heights. I would like to express my gratitude to two of our governors, Lesley Waters and Nigel Hamilton, who burnt the midnight oil collating all this information for us. That is no mean feat.

NEWBRIDGE RUGBY HITS THE HEIGHTS!
On Saturday, the Newbridge won the BANES tag rugby championship for the second year in the row. Having qualified in style for the final a few weeks earlier, the team turned in another scintillating performance to win against Trinity School by 16 tries to 8. Several seasoned watchers remarked that this was the best rugby they had seen played at this age. The team of Max, Ellie, Sammy, Caleb, Fran, Joe, Erin, Jacob and Harrison are largely the same team as last year and remain undefeated over two years. The whole squad also deserve a mention for the quality of both attitude and play. Well done to them all. The future also looks very bright with some Year 3 & 4 children showing some deft skills at Saturday’s festival.
('It has been a pleasure to work with such talented boys and girls who also have a great attitude to the game. I hope they continue to enjoy rugby in the future. Well done to them all. How wonderful too that we have children developing their talents and interests in so many sports and other activities such as music, drama, dance and much much more!' Mr Croker)

There are no pictures but the memories are enough! There were three teams in the Year 2 draw and four in the Reception / Year 1. All the girls and boys were stars and made us feel very proud. Well done to all the footballers! The support from the sidelines was magnificent and noisy. When the dust finally settled, Superstrikers came out on top in the Year 2s and Wookies did likewise in the Reception/Year 1s. A huge thank you to Matt Grosvenor for refereeing and helping to organise, to Cabi Grosvenor for organising the referees and running the table, and our team managers for getting the best out of their players. 5W'S FRENCH CAFE
On Tuesday 8th July 5W held an amazing French Café in the Blue Room. In the morning we split up into groups and did some cooking. Two groups managed to make some delicious homemade bread. Some groups were decorating the Blue Room making origami flowers to go on the tables. Other groups were preparing food for the café such as fruit kebabs and strawberry milkshakes. At 11:30 the café opened. Some people were customers such as Mr Croker, Miss Simpson and Mrs Walsh. We all had to speak in French and put on our best French accents. Just as the café was ending we sang our French song in the tune of the twelve days of Christmas. We all had a great time and Mr Croker said it was the best café he had been to.

GRAND LEAVERS' PARTY
Calling all Year 6 leavers! Don’t forget it’s party time on Thursday 24th July from 5.00pm-7.30pm. This year’s party and disco should be even more exciting with food, entertainment, photos and extra surprises! There will be a £2 charge but this will include food and drink at the party as well as the disco. Letters will follow shortly. Year 5 are welcome to join in for the disco at 6.30. Thanks to all parents who offered to help. We could still do with a few more volunteers especially to help set up in the afternoon. Please contact Lesley Houston (Ella 6N) or Sara Lyne (Ellie 6B). Thanks.

Congratulations and Good Luck to Natasha (4A) in her forthcoming performances at the Theatre Royal in 'The Doll’s House' with the Peter Hall Company.

THANK YOU FROM THE FELIX FUND
The Open Gardens and Plant Sale arranged by residents of Audley Avenue on Sunday 22nd June was extremely well supported and, despite very gusty weather, raised a fabulous total of £700. This money will go towards the Felix Fund, a charity organised by former Newbridge teacher, Lindy Platt, who is raising money to train a doctor in Malawi.
Lindy, and ex-Newbridge teacher David Evans, thank all those who supported this event, especially those who helped with the organisation, opened their gardens or made a personal donation. You may be assured that the money will all be channelled effectively, via VSO, as and when it is needed.
Felix ended the present term by being top in his year group again. Immediate funds were sent to cover a new pair of shoes and a mobile phone for personal contact with Lindy, who knows how important an occasional text message from the UK can be.

HEAD'S VIEW
Since my last Head's View so much has happened. The ReNewbridge celebrations, Maths Week, the Year 3 and 4 Caribbean Day, the Lower and Upper School sports days, the Bath Schools brass instrument day, the 2RB class assembly, various sporting events …………….. and this is just the tip of the iceberg. There are so many 'well dones' I want to say to the organisers of these events, to the girls and boys who make all the work so worthwhile and to our parents and families who give unstinting support. Thank you to all of you.

There are some personal 'thank yous' I would like to say…… to Mrs Phillips for organising an excellent 'Maths Week' and for doing all the spade work in creating the 'Reach for the Sun' number skills practice sheets (see display board in upper school foyer), to Victoria and Phillip Janseunne who of late have given every waking moment (and their considerable expertise) to produce a new school prospectus of which we feel very proud (see website) and to Sarah Le Butt, Judy Groves, Catherine Marlowe and Kim Noad who have been setting up our new school library with, quite literally, months of labelling, sorting, cataloguing and putting over 4000 books on the computer system. The library which will be fully open for use in September is down to their commitment.

FUND RAISING FOR CLIC
As you know, this year we have raised funds for the RUH (local), Lepra (international) and next week we are raising funds for CLIC (national). I know this will be close to many of your hearts as we will be helping children with cancer and leukaemia (Cancer and Leukaemia In Childhood). Today, in assembly, Mrs Balch (daughter Maura in Elm) introduced us to CLIC and news of a little boy she has supported through raising funds by riding her bike a very long way!

Our turn comes next Friday 11th July when we are having a mufti day and we ask you to make a contribution of £1 (or more if you are able) for the privilege. In addition, on that day we are holding a Newbridge version of 'You’ve Got Talent'. We are inviting our children to enter the competition, either as an individual or in pairs or groups. To enter we ask that you make an additional contribution of £1 (or more if you are able). The children will show their entry in their class during the day (maximum two minutes) and one will be chosen from each class to go through to a special whole school assembly later in the day. It should be fun and at the same time we are doing our bit to support such a worthy cause. Please can all money be sent in on the day in one envelope labelled with your child’s name, class and the word 'CLIC' We thank you in advance for your support. Mr Croker

PLEASE NOTE….
v that the Lower School playground is not to be used at the end of school. The field is available for use, under parental supervision, until the top gate closes.
v that the Lower School playground climbing apparatus and play equipment, such as footballs, are not to be used before school starts.
v that the use of sunglasses in school should be on prescription only.
v that your support in providing water only for your child to drink in school is appreciated.

THANK YOU
Sam and Ashley Room would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for the overwhelming amount of continued support shown to our family following the head injury Elliot sustained after a fall. This was a very frightening time for the whole family. We were very grateful for the amount of cards, gifts and offers of help given to us by all the parents and teachers at Newbridge; this did make a huge difference to Elliot’s recovery, especially the huge card received from all his class.
Elliot continues to progress well and is expected to make a full recovery, which we are all grateful for. We would also like to say a special thank you to Mrs Harrison, Mrs Bateman and Mr Croker for the extra help and support they gave us, and to all those who are helping Elliot back at school and return to a normal life.
Thank you from the parents of Elliot, Elm Class.

PUPILS' VIEW
This week is Maths Week and we have been involved in many activities. On Monday we had a maths roadshow. A lady called Lea taught us a great deal about maths. She also taught us that the opposite sides on a dice always add up to 7.
On Tuesday we taught Reception and Year 1 a maths game. We did the same on Wednesday but with the Year 2s and 3s. They all listened very well and said they enjoyed the games. Also on Tuesday we started out maths hats ready for the parade on Friday. Our teachers told us to be creative. Some of us put fractions on our hats and some times tables.
The activities this week have made us more confident in doing maths; the whole week has been fantastic and we don’t want it to end!
When we asked the younger children what they felt about the work we had done with them they said:

“I liked the way we had to work together.” Hannah, 2RB

“I thought they were fun but educational.” Indigo, 2S

“The Year 6s were nice to me and the maths games were really fun.” Phoebe, Elm

“I like a challenge and the games were fun but challenging.” Kirstie, 2GB

CELEBRATING WRITING
THE CHANGING PARK
In wintertime the bare shrivelled tree stood like a guardian in the centre of the park. The big icy lake sat near it like a huge mirror, as children skated on it laughing. The snow was like an immense white blanket as children got handfuls of it and threw it at other people gleefully. The birds, that had once been in the park, were now flying away towards the horizon, slowly turning smaller and smaller until they were tiny little specks. Happy children zoomed down a hill on small wooden sledges until the sledges finally stopped moving.

A big thank you to everyone who helped to make the Fashion Show such a success... including those who sold tickets (Emma, Theresa, Tracey, Sarah, Jules, Ann, Cherry and Donna), to the gorgeous and courageous models (Laura, Donna, Dawn, Ishbel, Catherine, Donna, Jackie and Anna), to those who helped set up and clear up (especially Cathy, Pauline, Lucy, Sophie and Gill), to those who bought tickets, drank wine, treated themselves to over £1000 pounds worth of super clothes, make-up, jewellery and bags, and to Great Western Wine and Stewart for supplying the wine and running the bar.
If you couldn't make it on Friday, there's always next year.........

OPEN GARDENS AND PLANT SALE
Many parents will remember former teacher Lindy Platt, who left Newbridge for Malawi to train teachers with VSO. Lindy stayed in Africa for over four years, extending her original period of service and setting up self-help projects for the very poorest people in outlying villages, enabling them to grow more food and send older children to secondary school.
Lindy has now pledged to raise the money to help a boy named Felix to reach his long-held ambition to become a doctor and has launched ‘The Felix Fund’. Residents in Audley Avenue are supporting this cause by organising an Open Gardens event and plant sale on SUNDAY 22nd JUNE from 1.30 – 5.00pm. Lindy will open the event and show a few photos from her time in Malawi.
Adult admission to the gardens, none of which has been ‘tweaked’ for the occasion, will be a modest £1.50 and accompanied children are welcome too.

THURSDAY 10th JULY 2008 AT 6.00PM

NEWSLETTER Issue: 6.02

HEAD'S VIEW
It is that time of year when minds are turning towards the coming September and the next stage in our children's journey. As promised in a previous newsletter I bring you news of next year's classes and teachers. Please see details below. We have reshuffled the classes in the present Years 2, 3 and 4 for reasons as explained in a recent Newsletter. The classes in the other years remain unchanged. I can assure you a great deal of thought and time has been taken to ensure a good academic and social balance, as well as friendships which have also been carefully taken into account. For parents and carers of children in the current Years 2, 3 and 4 please find attached a class list. We will be moving from 17 to 15 classes as a step along the way towards our target number at amalgamation of 14 classes. The double mobile classroom currently housing Year 3 will be vacated and Year 3 will move into what is currently the spare classroom and 2GB. There will be further information about our plans for September in the coming weeks.

A full year's calendar of events will be coming out to you with the first newsletter after the summer break but I need to forewarn you all that we will be taking three of our allotted five INSET days from Wednesday 3rd September to Friday 5th September. This means that the children will start back on Monday 8th September.

Word has it that I was on holiday last week with the Year 6 team on their residential trip to the Isle of Wight. I would like to report that it was unremitting hard work but I am afraid I cannot! The Year 6 children were an absolute delight to be with and they deserve huge credit for their attitude, behaviour and sense of fun. So do the staff team, who like the Year 5 Kilve Court team before them, gave up their home lives for a week to ensure a fabulous week for the children. I would like to thank them all. Beyond the residential trips, it is a rare day when I do not feel very proud of being the Head at Newbridge, with so many acts of kindness, so much excellent work and huge effort on the part of so many of all ages. Keep it up everyone!

Next Thursday we say farewell to our four PGCE teacher trainees. All four, Miss Shepard (Willow), Mr Callaway (1HO), Miss Webb (3C) and Miss Khuttan (4P), are a credit to their profession and we say 'thank you' to them and wish them luck as they apply for their first teaching jobs.

MATHS CURRICULUM EVENING - TUESDAY 17TH JUNE at 6.30PM – 7.45PM
Come along to our Maths Curriculum Evening on Tuesday 17th June at 6.30pm. Enjoy a cup of coffee whilst browsing our Maths Exhibition, where you will see our new times table system, be challenged to some maths magic by Year 5 children or even have a go at the Primary Maths Challenge! Feel free to look at how we use ICT to support maths – you can even bring your memory stick along and we will download some useful websites for you.

At 6.45pm join us in the hall for some workshops, including calculating in the early years and techniques and strategies for embedding times tables. See the enclosed letter for full details.

The evening will end with an introduction to 'Reach for the Sun', a whole school approach for embedding the recall of number facts and times tables. (Please note that it is not relevant for children to attend on this occasion). We hope to see you there!

NEWBRIDGE STARS SHINE ON CHESS BOARD AT NATIONAL SCHOOLS SEMI FINALS
On the 17-18th May three teams of 6 (under 11s semi, under 9s semi and under 9s plate) went to Brean Sands to play in the semi final or plate competition. The under 9s semi team played Magdalen College. Unfortunately they all lost. In the second round we played The Grange. In that round we got three wins. In the third round we played Rougemont and we won one and a half points. In the fourth round we played Chad Vale and we won one point. In the sixth round we played Colet Court and we won none. Overall the under 9s semi team did really well and picked up 7 points.

Our under 9 plate team played St Andrews in the first round and we won one and a half points. In the second round we played Kings Hawford and won one and a half points. In the third round we played Hampstead Garden Suburb (Mr Croker’s primary school!) and won half a point. In the fourth round we played Akiva and won 2 and a half points. In the fifth round we played Ash and won two points. The sixth round was a friendly but we won three points. Overall the under 9 plate team did really well and finished with 11 and a half points.

Our under 11 semi final team played Kings Gloucester in the first round and we won three and a half points. In the second round we played Denmead and won five points. In the third round we played Hall School and won two points. In the fourth round we played Colet Court B and we won five points. In the fifth round we played Hampstead Garden Suburb and won two points. In the sixth round we played St Mary’s Twickenham and won three points. Overall the under 11 semi team did really well and got fifteen and a half points.

We would like to thank Mr Croker for supporting us and all the parents that helped. By Joda, Jake and Max.

('I think the boys are being very modest in their excellent report. All sixteen players should take great credit in doing so well against very strong opposition from all over the country. They faced a number of county players, some national players and nearly all the players we faced were much more experienced than us. The two under 9 teams took away a bronze award with them and the under 11 team a silver. Well done to all the players and to their parents who gave up a weekend supporting our children and school.' Mr Croker)

CERTIFICATES OF EXCELLENCE
At the end of every month each class teacher has a very difficult decision to face. They have to choose the one person from their class to receive a Certificate of Excellence. The person they choose has to consistently be the best that he or she can be. That could be in effort and attitude, achievement, behaviour or citizenship. Sometimes it can be very difficult deciding as all of the children at Newbridge seem to work so hard and behave so well!
The people with their names here this month deserve congratulating. It is not easy to be awarded a Certificate of Excellence and they have done extremely well.

DEPUTY HEAD'S VIEW
Welcome back everyone to the last term of the school year! As always a busy term lies ahead. We especially welcome back Miss Palmer, who has now returned from maternity absence following the birth of her son Isaac. She is returning for four days a week and therefore Mr Baigent will be teaching alongside Miss Palmer in Class 5D on a Friday.

This week sees the Year 6 children in the Isle of Wight for the annual residential trip along with 6 members of staff and for the majority of the week, Mr Croker. (I was asked if he had completed a holiday form!). Although a little soggy at the start of the week, spirits were not dampened and by all accounts have had a wonderful time. We look forward to hearing more on their return.

Please can I ask all parents to ensure that all school clothing is named. The pile of lost property mounted last term and we were unable to return much of this to the rightful owners. May I also ask that all children adhere to agreed uniform policy; it has been noted that a number of children are wearing trainers and non-school sweatshirts. Please note that as of September 2008 all children are required to wear school clothing bearing the new school logo.

Many thanks to those parents who have been able to return the parental questionnaire. Your comments are extremely valuable to us in helping move the school forward, therefore if you have not returned it, please do so as soon as possible.

You will note that I have sent an accompanying letter regarding Breakfast Club. I am extremely keen to offer this on more days and so please urge you to complete the attached slip indicating your provisional needs. The club that currently operates on a Wednesday is extremely successful and enjoyable.

A NOTE FROM THE NPSA TREASURER
As the next fund-raising event, the Fashion Show, approaches, I thought you'd all like to know what we have been doing with the money we've raised so far this year. Well, the list so far includes:

· santa's presents at the Christmas Fair
· trips and events for the children e.g. food for Greek Day, Papermaking workshop, the Roman Baths Tour, trip to the American Museum
· refreshments for Book at Bedtime
· a piano
· display boards
· hockey goalie kit and netball bibs

In addition, ReNewbridge money has so far been spent on the new staging and the sound and lighting system in the main hall, and books and chairs for the new library.

HEAD'S VIEW
Today we say a sad 'farewell' to Miss Donnelly whose contract comes to an end as Ms Palmer returns after half term from maternity leave. Miss Donnelly has made a deep impression on us all since her arrival in September. It seems like she has been with us so much longer and, Miss Donnelly, I mean that in the best sense! It feels like that because she has given so much to the children, to the staff and she has just thrown herself into the wider life of the school. Miss Donnelly moves to a post at Peasedown St John Primary and we wish her all the very best there and in the future.

Two other people I want to mention are Mrs Boyle and Mrs Verrechia. Since Ms Palmer’s absence, Mrs Boyle has taken on the role of Year 5/6 phase leader and served on the school management team. She steps down today to make way for Ms Palmer but I want to thank her publicly for all that she has brought to the role and to the school. Drumming in Years 1 and 2 is hugely popular with the children and the reason for that is Mrs Verrechia, ably assisted by her family! Mrs Verrechia's last club for this year is today but the good news is that she returns in September to inspire another generation of drummers.

The parents' and carers' questionnaire goes out today, as mentioned in last week’s newsletter. Your time in completing this questionnaire is greatly appreciated because it really does help us continue to move on as a school. The deadline for return of these forms is Friday 6th June.

As you know, we have had to postpone today's celebrations marking the opening of the new facilities and our ReNewbridge efforts but we try again. Please see the invitation below for Friday 13th June. That leaves me with little else than to say ‘well done and thank you’ to all the staff who continue to do their very best for the children and to the children themselves for making this school such a delight to be in. I hope you all have a great half term!

HEAD'S VIEW
Next week we will be issuing our annual parental questionnaire. This is important to us in moving the school forward. I include a policy below which illustrates how last year’s feedback helped us look with a fresh eye at the way we inform parents about our children's progress, about what and how they are taught and about their day to day routines. The time you take to complete the questionnaire is greatly appreciated.

Sally Wright, from LEPRA, joined us for our whole school Monday assembly this week and we celebrated with her our fund raising efforts. In total we raised over £1800, the largest amount raised by a primary school for LEPRA. This means that 89 children and adults will be cured of leprosy. Our gratitude goes to all our families who showed that their generosity goes well beyond ReNewbridge. I feel very proud that the people in this school have such values.

As the much publicised SATs week draws to a close, I would like to say 'well done' to our Year 6 girls and boys for all the hard work and positive attitude they have shown in the lead up to the assessments. This is also an opportunity to remind them that learning is for life, not for a few papers in May of 2008, and therefore we expect their best to the last minute of the last day of the summer term……and the last minute of their time at secondary school……..and……….!

Last but not least, we say 'farewell' to Connor (2S) who leaves us on Monday to start a new life in Bridgenorth. He is a lovely boy with a great personality and we wish him and his family all the very best.

PROCEDURES FOR REPORTING TO PARENTS
Introduction
In an overwhelmingly positive parental questionnaire (2007), one area that our parents felt we could do better was reporting to parents. 25% disagreed that 'the school keeps me well informed of my child’s progress' and 28% disagreed that 'I am given a clear idea about what and how my child is taught'. The verbal feedback in that questionnaire highlighted this as a key issue. As a result the policy of reporting to parents has been redrafted and will run as follows:
How is my child getting on?
We will keep three parents’ evenings a year. The first one is held in mid October, the second in February just before half term and the third will be in July, following reports home. This third one is considered 'optional'.
Written report – this has been revamped to make it more succinct and more informative with assessment data included in all years. This new version will be used in the reports coming out shortly.
What is my child being taught?
From September 2008, a curriculum plan will be sent out at the beginning of each term and put on the website. This will be one side of A4 and will consist of broad headings under each subject incl. topics and other learning.
How do they do things in the year above?
There are changes from one year to the next; expectations, daily routines etc which often cause concern to parents. We propose to introduce, from September 2008, a 'getting to know you' talk to parents in the classroom given by the class teacher. The timing will be 2.30 to 3.00pm so that the children can attend assembly. We will spread this over the second and third week of term and have one year group at a time.
How is my child being taught?
We propose to hold two curricular evenings a year to inform our parents of teaching & learning approaches within the school and to keep you fully informed of any developments and changes.

MATHS DAY
On Wednesday 30th April four children from year 5 went to the Guild Hall to take part in a maths day. At the maths day we did lots of different things but most of them were related to famous mathematicians. We looked at a mathematician called Goldbach. He made a theory that every even number above 4 could be made by adding 2 prime numbers together and this theory had never been proved so we had a go at proving it. This was fun but we didn't prove it. As well as doing that we had a look at Pascal's Triangle. We tried to find different patterns dotted around the triangle. We also did a bit of mind reading (this mind reading did involve maths, but not too much), that was fun too!

Overall we had a good time and would like to thank Mrs Phillips for organising it.
By Harriet and Finlay.
('Some impressive mathematics going on here. I look forward to hearing more from this group at the up and coming Maths Curriculum Evening for parents after half term.' Mr Croker)

TAG RUGBY REPORT
On Thursday 9th April two Newbridge Tag Rugby teams played against Combe Down School. In the first game the red team lost 11-12 and the blue team lost 10—11. In the second game the reds lost 13-14 but the blues drew 9-9. At the end Mr Croker said well done to us all and we went to have tea and biscuits and orange juice in the Blue Room and to talk to the parents about the game.
By Ben and Charlie.
('‘We are the existing BANES tag rugby champions and I have to say, that with this crop of Year 5 players, the future of rugby at Newbridge looks bright. Ben and Charlie have been very modest by omitting that all of our players were from Year 5 while most of the opposition were Year 6. HEAD'S VIEW
We are busy putting many plans in place for September, not least class organisation, and I will be letting you know about classes and staffing for September shortly after half term.

Ahead of that I would like to outline our policy in this aspect. Firstly, I can confirm that there will be no mixed year classes in the school and that is a principle we do all we can to adhere to (numbers permitting). That does mean that some classes will have slightly higher numbers than others but we believe that is far more preferable than mixing years to balance numbers. We will also target support in classes depending on certain criteria and one of those is class size. Secondly, there is sometimes a need to reassemble classes within a year due to an imbalance of numbers or to achieve a better social and academic mix. Where this is the case it is our policy to consult the children on friendship groupings and then decide among the staff on the best balance across the classes in that year. We will take into account a variety of factors and then make our decisions based on the desire to achieve the best academic and social mix across the classes. This has to be our decision. Only where there are exceptional circumstances, that we are not already aware of, would parents be involved in this process. Rest assured that any decision we make is to achieve the best for every single girl and boy under our care.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend and that this fantastic weather stays with us!

NEWBRIDGE PARENTS ASSOCIATION WINS TROPHY!
We went with Mrs Rixson and Mrs Sellick to Bath Spa station in a taxi then we got on a train to Paddington. We got on an underground train to Victoria and then another one to Green Park. By now we were very excited. We walked to Lancaster House and it was full of gold, real gold, it was amazing! We met a person called Caroline who showed us around and told us what was going to happen. Then we sat down with everybody else to see who had won the trophy. When we heard that Newbridge School had won the trophy and a thousand pounds, we were shocked but very pleased. Then we went out and saw Buckingham Palace. We had something to eat on the train back to Bath. When we got back to Newbridge we chatted to Mr Croker and told him that we had had a really fun day. By Elijah and Lucas.

Mrs Sellick and Mrs Rixson were very proud of Lucas and Elijah – their behaviour was brilliant. It was an exhausting day but they didn’t complain once!

('And I feel very proud of the four who represented us and the hundreds who have given so much to ReNewbridge. Congratulations to you all!' Mr Croker)

HEAD'S VIEW
Today we say farewell to a lovely family as Tiffani(5C) and Tommy Lee (3C) leave us to take up places at Camerton School after a recent house move to that area. It has been a pleasure to have both children at our school and we wish them all the very best in the future. We will miss them.
As two leave us, Treesa (1HO) started on Wednesday and is settling in well. Treesa and her family have only recently arrived from southern India and so life here must seem quite strange to her at the moment. We hope these coming years at Newbridge will be a very special time for her. Two Norland nurses have joined us this week in Elm and Willow. They are Caroline Peachy and Evelyn Bruins and we extend a very warm welcome to them both.

We are currently advertising for three posts for September. Firstly, we are seeking a Reading Recovery teacher on a 0.6 three year contract. We are among nine schools in BANES who applied for and received funding from the Local Authority to employ a teacher who will be working with a small number of our children in Key Stage 1. Reading Recovery started in New Zealand in the 1990s and is now used worldwide. In short, it is the best support programme of its kind in terms of raising attainment in reading and writing and we are very keen to give our children who need it this kind of opportunity. The second post is a librarian & manager of the Learning Resource Centre for 20 hours per week. We see this as a key step in placing reading and books, as well as the use of ICT, at the heart of our school. The third post is a temporary SENCo post while Mrs Skinner goes on maternity leave at the end of the summer term. The closing date for all three posts is 8th May and I will, of course, bring you up to date with any appointments made. I cannot move on to my final piece of news without congratulating Mrs Skinner on her great news!

On Wednesday of this week, Mrs Sellick, Mrs Rixson, Lucas and Elijah (both Year 3) travelled up to London to attend the finals of the National School Association awards. There will be a full report very shortly on what was a very plush event but I have to tell you that they came back with a lovely trophy and a winners' cheque for £1000 for the best fund raising achievement in the country! The cheque is brilliant but what pleases me most is that it was truly a team effort and that has been recognised – congratulations to you all and to Mrs Massie for submitting our application in the first place!

This invite is extended to all our families, last year's leavers and their families, and our neighbours. HOCKEY REPORTS
On Sunday 27th April the Newbridge hockey team went to the University to play in a tournament. The first match was against Yate Dolphins which we won 1-0 thanks to a great goal from Emilie. The next match was against Shoscombe which again we won 1-0 with an amazing goal from Alex. The third match was against Newbridge B that we won 3-0. We had won all our matches so went into the play-offs, against St Michael's. We won that 4-0 with 3 superb goals from Alex and a stunning goal from Harry and because we won that we got through to the final against St Stephens. Unfortunately we lost that game 1-0. We had lots of chances on goal but failed to put any of them away. We would like to thank Mrs Bartlett for coaching us and everyone who came and supported us. By Ellie and Emilie.

On Sunday 27th April Newbridge and Newbridge A hockey teams went up to the University to play in a tournament. We all took umbrellas and coats, expecting heavy rain, yet how were we to know that all we needed was sun cream! Newbridge had their first match against Yate Orcas which we unfortunately lost 1-0. Our next match was against St Michael's A team. We all tried hard but the end score was 3-0 to them. Straight after that match we played a school called High Littleton but even though we tried hard we still lost that match with the score 4-0 to them. For our last match we played City of Bath in a friendly. Yet again we lost the match but for the first time in the whole hockey season we scored a goal (Newbridge A had scored goals but Newbridge never had!) Our supporters gave us the biggest cheer of the whole tournament! The goal was scored by Jay in year 5 and the final score was 2-1 to City of Bath. Overall we had a good time and it was a great way to end the hockey season. We would like to thank Mrs Bartlett for coaching us and all the parents and other adults for supporting us. By Harriet.

To say I was very proud of all the children who participated in the Hockey Tournament on Sunday would be an understatement. Not only did they all play extremely well but their behaviour was immaculate. It is occasions like these that remind me why I decided to be a teacher. Thank you to all the children and parents who have supported us all season. Well done everyone! (Mrs Bartlett)

('All the children involved were so impressive on and off the pitch. Well done to
all our hockey players! Our supporters were also brilliant and what can I say about Mrs Bartlett except a huge 'thank you'’ for giving up several Sundays to give this opportunity to our children.' Mr Croker)

REPORT ON YEAR 5 MATHS AND ICT DAY
On Tuesday 22nd April Year 5 went to Hayesfield School for a Maths and ICT day. First we were split into groups of four and were given instructions and pieces to help us build a lego robot. Once we had finished we got to add extra bits to the robot, like bumpers and claws to help it through the obstacle course which was called Ocean Odyssey. To complete this course we had to program our robot to move around the mat. We competed against other teams to see how many points we could win in a matter of two minutes. There was a winners' prize, a runners-up prize and a teamwork prize which were awarded at the end of the day.

Congratulations to all the children who took part in this activity. By the end of the day, the aim was to have fun, and we did! By Rosie, Jasmin, Paige and Jeorgia.

('Well done to the Year 5 team and the girls for this report. Our thanks too to Hayesfield for an inspiring day.' Mr Croker)

NEWBRIDGE PRIMARY SCHOOL ASSOCIATION NEWS
NEXT NPSA MEETING - TUESDAY 6th May AT 7:30PM IN THE BLUE ROOM.
It has been lovely the amount of parental support we are seeing. I have had lots of people saying "I would like to help but not sure how to get involved" or “I can’t commit to anything regular”.... just pop along to the meeting, drag a friend with you and see where you can help. We do need all the help we can get, many hands make light work. It is always surprising how many parents manage to help, even with up to 4 children, a partner working all hours, pregnant etc......so don't think that there is nothing that you can do, because you can and we can find you something. So look forward to seeing you after the Bank Holiday.
The cake sale..... didn't the teachers do well and watch this space for the next cake sale date to be confirmed. Years 3 and 4 parents and helpers at the ready.
NPSA Upcoming Events -
13th June – Ladies Fashion show - Get the date on the calendar, book the sitter and ask your friends to come. If you fancy having a go on the catwalk leave your name in the NPSA tray in the main Reception. More details to follow.
If you have any ideas to raise money, events, people that can help and can't make the meetings or would like to ask any questions then you can always email me at

HEAD'S VIEW
Welcome back to one and all after a two week break - I hope you all had a great time with family and friends. The school, however, has not stood still over the fortnight. The builders have been working overtime to complete the link building and, after six months, we are almost there! From this coming Monday the walkway and all exterior areas will be ready for use. The link building will not be open for use until Tuesday 6th May. From that day on the link building will be the main office and reception area (not my house unfortunately!). All the office furniture and computer systems will be moved at the end of next week, and into the weekend, so your understanding in terms of demands on the office staff on Thursday and Friday will be most appreciated. The library furniture will be installed next week so we hope to have that up and running as soon as possible. Today, we are saying 'farewell' to the Biggs building team in a special assembly – I cannot speak highly enough of them as individuals and as a team. We will miss them. Our opportunity to celebrate the opening of the new facilities, as well as the ReNewbridge fund raising campaign, will take place on Friday 23rd May. Please see the invitation below which is extended to all our families, last year's leavers and their families, and our neighbours.

On the staffing front, we welcome Mrs Heather Bateman back after two successive maternity leaves and two lovely young children, Jasper and Ava. Mrs Bateman returns to teaching one day a week in 2S, starting today, while Miss Slee is continuing to teach the other four days until the end of this academic year. Four trainee teachers also started their placements with us this week: Miss Julian Shepherd (Willow), Mr Callum Calloway (1HO), Miss Elizabeth Webb (3C) and Anita Khuttan (4P). All four are taking their PGCE at Bath Spa University and this will be their final placement before qualifying. I wish them all the best and I am sure that both the students and our school will gain in equal measure.

There has been some confusion over when clubs start and end. My apologies for any difficulties caused. From now on the dates as to when they begin and end each term will be published in September for the whole year. If there are any exceptions to those dates then the club leader will write directly to the parents of the children involved. For your information, the last clubs will take place this term in the week ending Friday 4th July 2008. Please also note the Isle of Wight and SATs meetings coming up next week in 'Dates For Your Dairy'.

CERTIFICATES OF EXCELLENCE – MARCH
At the end of every month each class teacher has a very difficult decision to face. They have to choose the one person from their class to receive a Certificate of Excellence. The person they choose has to consistently be the best that he or she can be. That could be in effort and attitude, achievement, behaviour or citizenship. Sometimes it can be very difficult deciding as all of the children at Newbridge seem to work so hard and behave so well! The people with their names here this month deserve congratulating. It is not easy to be awarded a Certificate of Excellence and they have done extremely well.
