NEWSLETTER Issue: 5.05

HEAD'S VIEW
Today we say a sad 'farewell' to Miss Donnelly whose contract comes to an end as Ms Palmer returns after half term from maternity leave. Miss Donnelly has made a deep impression on us all since her arrival in September. It seems like she has been with us so much longer and, Miss Donnelly, I mean that in the best sense! It feels like that because she has given so much to the children, to the staff and she has just thrown herself into the wider life of the school. Miss Donnelly moves to a post at Peasedown St John Primary and we wish her all the very best there and in the future.

Two other people I want to mention are Mrs Boyle and Mrs Verrechia. Since Ms Palmer’s absence, Mrs Boyle has taken on the role of Year 5/6 phase leader and served on the school management team. She steps down today to make way for Ms Palmer but I want to thank her publicly for all that she has brought to the role and to the school. Drumming in Years 1 and 2 is hugely popular with the children and the reason for that is Mrs Verrechia, ably assisted by her family! Mrs Verrechia's last club for this year is today but the good news is that she returns in September to inspire another generation of drummers.

The parents' and carers' questionnaire goes out today, as mentioned in last week’s newsletter. Your time in completing this questionnaire is greatly appreciated because it really does help us continue to move on as a school. The deadline for return of these forms is Friday 6th June.

As you know, we have had to postpone today's celebrations marking the opening of the new facilities and our ReNewbridge efforts but we try again. Please see the invitation below for Friday 13th June. That leaves me with little else than to say ‘well done and thank you’ to all the staff who continue to do their very best for the children and to the children themselves for making this school such a delight to be in. I hope you all have a great half term!

HEAD'S VIEW
Next week we will be issuing our annual parental questionnaire. This is important to us in moving the school forward. I include a policy below which illustrates how last year’s feedback helped us look with a fresh eye at the way we inform parents about our children's progress, about what and how they are taught and about their day to day routines. The time you take to complete the questionnaire is greatly appreciated.

Sally Wright, from LEPRA, joined us for our whole school Monday assembly this week and we celebrated with her our fund raising efforts. In total we raised over £1800, the largest amount raised by a primary school for LEPRA. This means that 89 children and adults will be cured of leprosy. Our gratitude goes to all our families who showed that their generosity goes well beyond ReNewbridge. I feel very proud that the people in this school have such values.

As the much publicised SATs week draws to a close, I would like to say 'well done' to our Year 6 girls and boys for all the hard work and positive attitude they have shown in the lead up to the assessments. This is also an opportunity to remind them that learning is for life, not for a few papers in May of 2008, and therefore we expect their best to the last minute of the last day of the summer term……and the last minute of their time at secondary school……..and……….!

Last but not least, we say 'farewell' to Connor (2S) who leaves us on Monday to start a new life in Bridgenorth. He is a lovely boy with a great personality and we wish him and his family all the very best.

PROCEDURES FOR REPORTING TO PARENTS
Introduction
In an overwhelmingly positive parental questionnaire (2007), one area that our parents felt we could do better was reporting to parents. 25% disagreed that 'the school keeps me well informed of my child’s progress' and 28% disagreed that 'I am given a clear idea about what and how my child is taught'. The verbal feedback in that questionnaire highlighted this as a key issue. As a result the policy of reporting to parents has been redrafted and will run as follows:
How is my child getting on?
We will keep three parents’ evenings a year. The first one is held in mid October, the second in February just before half term and the third will be in July, following reports home. This third one is considered 'optional'.
Written report – this has been revamped to make it more succinct and more informative with assessment data included in all years. This new version will be used in the reports coming out shortly.
What is my child being taught?
From September 2008, a curriculum plan will be sent out at the beginning of each term and put on the website. This will be one side of A4 and will consist of broad headings under each subject incl. topics and other learning.
How do they do things in the year above?
There are changes from one year to the next; expectations, daily routines etc which often cause concern to parents. We propose to introduce, from September 2008, a 'getting to know you' talk to parents in the classroom given by the class teacher. The timing will be 2.30 to 3.00pm so that the children can attend assembly. We will spread this over the second and third week of term and have one year group at a time.
How is my child being taught?
We propose to hold two curricular evenings a year to inform our parents of teaching & learning approaches within the school and to keep you fully informed of any developments and changes.

MATHS DAY
On Wednesday 30th April four children from year 5 went to the Guild Hall to take part in a maths day. At the maths day we did lots of different things but most of them were related to famous mathematicians. We looked at a mathematician called Goldbach. He made a theory that every even number above 4 could be made by adding 2 prime numbers together and this theory had never been proved so we had a go at proving it. This was fun but we didn't prove it. As well as doing that we had a look at Pascal's Triangle. We tried to find different patterns dotted around the triangle. We also did a bit of mind reading (this mind reading did involve maths, but not too much), that was fun too!

Overall we had a good time and would like to thank Mrs Phillips for organising it.
By Harriet and Finlay.
('Some impressive mathematics going on here. I look forward to hearing more from this group at the up and coming Maths Curriculum Evening for parents after half term.' Mr Croker)

TAG RUGBY REPORT
On Thursday 9th April two Newbridge Tag Rugby teams played against Combe Down School. In the first game the red team lost 11-12 and the blue team lost 10—11. In the second game the reds lost 13-14 but the blues drew 9-9. At the end Mr Croker said well done to us all and we went to have tea and biscuits and orange juice in the Blue Room and to talk to the parents about the game.
By Ben and Charlie.
('‘We are the existing BANES tag rugby champions and I have to say, that with this crop of Year 5 players, the future of rugby at Newbridge looks bright. Ben and Charlie have been very modest by omitting that all of our players were from Year 5 while most of the opposition were Year 6. That said, it was a lovely warm afternoon and it was a pleasure to host our visitors who, to the last girl and boy, made a point of thanking us for the event.' Mr Croker).

HEAD'S VIEW
We are busy putting many plans in place for September, not least class organisation, and I will be letting you know about classes and staffing for September shortly after half term.

Ahead of that I would like to outline our policy in this aspect. Firstly, I can confirm that there will be no mixed year classes in the school and that is a principle we do all we can to adhere to (numbers permitting). That does mean that some classes will have slightly higher numbers than others but we believe that is far more preferable than mixing years to balance numbers. We will also target support in classes depending on certain criteria and one of those is class size. Secondly, there is sometimes a need to reassemble classes within a year due to an imbalance of numbers or to achieve a better social and academic mix. Where this is the case it is our policy to consult the children on friendship groupings and then decide among the staff on the best balance across the classes in that year. We will take into account a variety of factors and then make our decisions based on the desire to achieve the best academic and social mix across the classes. This has to be our decision. Only where there are exceptional circumstances, that we are not already aware of, would parents be involved in this process. Rest assured that any decision we make is to achieve the best for every single girl and boy under our care.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend and that this fantastic weather stays with us!

NEWBRIDGE PARENTS ASSOCIATION WINS TROPHY!
We went with Mrs Rixson and Mrs Sellick to Bath Spa station in a taxi then we got on a train to Paddington. We got on an underground train to Victoria and then another one to Green Park. By now we were very excited. We walked to Lancaster House and it was full of gold, real gold, it was amazing! We met a person called Caroline who showed us around and told us what was going to happen. Then we sat down with everybody else to see who had won the trophy. When we heard that Newbridge School had won the trophy and a thousand pounds, we were shocked but very pleased. Then we went out and saw Buckingham Palace. We had something to eat on the train back to Bath. When we got back to Newbridge we chatted to Mr Croker and told him that we had had a really fun day. By Elijah and Lucas.

Mrs Sellick and Mrs Rixson were very proud of Lucas and Elijah – their behaviour was brilliant. It was an exhausting day but they didn’t complain once!

('And I feel very proud of the four who represented us and the hundreds who have given so much to ReNewbridge. Congratulations to you all!' Mr Croker)

HEAD'S VIEW
Today we say farewell to a lovely family as Tiffani(5C) and Tommy Lee (3C) leave us to take up places at Camerton School after a recent house move to that area. It has been a pleasure to have both children at our school and we wish them all the very best in the future. We will miss them.
As two leave us, Treesa (1HO) started on Wednesday and is settling in well. Treesa and her family have only recently arrived from southern India and so life here must seem quite strange to her at the moment. We hope these coming years at Newbridge will be a very special time for her. Two Norland nurses have joined us this week in Elm and Willow. They are Caroline Peachy and Evelyn Bruins and we extend a very warm welcome to them both.

We are currently advertising for three posts for September. Firstly, we are seeking a Reading Recovery teacher on a 0.6 three year contract. We are among nine schools in BANES who applied for and received funding from the Local Authority to employ a teacher who will be working with a small number of our children in Key Stage 1. Reading Recovery started in New Zealand in the 1990s and is now used worldwide. In short, it is the best support programme of its kind in terms of raising attainment in reading and writing and we are very keen to give our children who need it this kind of opportunity. The second post is a librarian & manager of the Learning Resource Centre for 20 hours per week. We see this as a key step in placing reading and books, as well as the use of ICT, at the heart of our school. The third post is a temporary SENCo post while Mrs Skinner goes on maternity leave at the end of the summer term. The closing date for all three posts is 8th May and I will, of course, bring you up to date with any appointments made. I cannot move on to my final piece of news without congratulating Mrs Skinner on her great news!

On Wednesday of this week, Mrs Sellick, Mrs Rixson, Lucas and Elijah (both Year 3) travelled up to London to attend the finals of the National School Association awards. There will be a full report very shortly on what was a very plush event but I have to tell you that they came back with a lovely trophy and a winners' cheque for £1000 for the best fund raising achievement in the country! The cheque is brilliant but what pleases me most is that it was truly a team effort and that has been recognised – congratulations to you all and to Mrs Massie for submitting our application in the first place!

HOCKEY REPORTS
On Sunday 27th April the Newbridge hockey team went to the University to play in a tournament. The first match was against Yate Dolphins which we won 1-0 thanks to a great goal from Emilie. The next match was against Shoscombe which again we won 1-0 with an amazing goal from Alex. The third match was against Newbridge B that we won 3-0. We had won all our matches so went into the play-offs, against St Michael's. We won that 4-0 with 3 superb goals from Alex and a stunning goal from Harry and because we won that we got through to the final against St Stephens. Unfortunately we lost that game 1-0. We had lots of chances on goal but failed to put any of them away. We would like to thank Mrs Bartlett for coaching us and everyone who came and supported us. By Ellie and Emilie.

On Sunday 27th April Newbridge and Newbridge A hockey teams went up to the University to play in a tournament. We all took umbrellas and coats, expecting heavy rain, yet how were we to know that all we needed was sun cream! Newbridge had their first match against Yate Orcas which we unfortunately lost 1-0. Our next match was against St Michael's A team. We all tried hard but the end score was 3-0 to them. Straight after that match we played a school called High Littleton but even though we tried hard we still lost that match with the score 4-0 to them. For our last match we played City of Bath in a friendly. Yet again we lost the match but for the first time in the whole hockey season we scored a goal (Newbridge A had scored goals but Newbridge never had!) Our supporters gave us the biggest cheer of the whole tournament! The goal was scored by Jay in year 5 and the final score was 2-1 to City of Bath. Overall we had a good time and it was a great way to end the hockey season. We would like to thank Mrs Bartlett for coaching us and all the parents and other adults for supporting us. By Harriet.

To say I was very proud of all the children who participated in the Hockey Tournament on Sunday would be an understatement. Not only did they all play extremely well but their behaviour was immaculate. It is occasions like these that remind me why I decided to be a teacher. Thank you to all the children and parents who have supported us all season. Well done everyone! (Mrs Bartlett)

('All the children involved were so impressive on and off the pitch. Well done to
all our hockey players! Our supporters were also brilliant and what can I say about Mrs Bartlett except a huge 'thank you'’ for giving up several Sundays to give this opportunity to our children.' Mr Croker)

REPORT ON YEAR 5 MATHS AND ICT DAY
On Tuesday 22nd April Year 5 went to Hayesfield School for a Maths and ICT day. First we were split into groups of four and were given instructions and pieces to help us build a lego robot. Once we had finished we got to add extra bits to the robot, like bumpers and claws to help it through the obstacle course which was called Ocean Odyssey. To complete this course we had to program our robot to move around the mat. We competed against other teams to see how many points we could win in a matter of two minutes. There was a winners' prize, a runners-up prize and a teamwork prize which were awarded at the end of the day.

Congratulations to all the children who took part in this activity. By the end of the day, the aim was to have fun, and we did! By Rosie, Jasmin, Paige and Jeorgia.

('Well done to the Year 5 team and the girls for this report. Our thanks too to Hayesfield for an inspiring day.' Mr Croker)

NEWBRIDGE PRIMARY SCHOOL ASSOCIATION NEWS
NEXT NPSA MEETING - TUESDAY 6th May AT 7:30PM IN THE BLUE ROOM.
It has been lovely the amount of parental support we are seeing. I have had lots of people saying "I would like to help but not sure how to get involved" or “I can’t commit to anything regular”.... just pop along to the meeting, drag a friend with you and see where you can help. We do need all the help we can get, many hands make light work. It is always surprising how many parents manage to help, even with up to 4 children, a partner working all hours, pregnant etc......so don't think that there is nothing that you can do, because you can and we can find you something. So look forward to seeing you after the Bank Holiday.
The cake sale..... didn't the teachers do well and watch this space for the next cake sale date to be confirmed. Years 3 and 4 parents and helpers at the ready.
