HEAD'S VIEW
It is 9pm Wednesday and the school is empty and quiet. I am sitting at my desk thinking over this past year as I write these words. Wow, what a year! This evening we watched enthralled as the Year 6 girls and boys performed their ‘Jungle Book’ for the last time. It was a fantastic show and I know I am not alone in saying how proud I feel of these girls and boys who, in two days time, are going to leave us for the next chapter in their lives. We want to thank them for all that they have brought to the school; their enthusiasm, their talent and their willingness to have a go at everything put in front of them. They are fine young people and it is a privilege to know them, as it is Daisy (1HO) who moves to Corsham School and Treesa (1HO) who moves to St Mary’s School. We wish every one of our leavers and their families all the very best for the future.
We also say a huge ‘thank you’ to Andy Powell who steps down as Chair of the Governors after five years at the helm. He is respected and appreciated by all for helping to steer the school through some difficult times, with amalgamation, several changes of leadership and so on. He has done so with considerable skill and without ever forgetting the human touch. He has been very ably assisted by Lisa Pritchard who has been an excellent clerk to the governors. Lisa is also stepping aside and we thank her for all her work.
I could write a book on this year alone. I have seen so many fantastic achievements, so many people of all ages wanting to do their very best, so many talents being discovered and developed and countless acts of thoughtfulness and kindness. Well done to our children on such a good year – I only wish my reports at school had been as good as the vast majority of our children!
I cannot finish the final Head’s View of the year without mentioning the staff –every single one of them. Quite simply, they are fabulous and our children and families are very fortunate to have such a dedicated team who will do anything for the children. I can think of no higher praise than saying that if my children were this age again I would love them all to come to Newbridge Primary School. Thank you – you fully deserve that deckchair, the waves lapping at your feet and the glass of lemonade...
It is nearly time to finish and let you all enjoy these coming weeks with your families. We like to laugh at Newbridge and not a day goes by without the children telling me a joke or two. These are some of my favourites to finish the year on:
I also know for a certainty that our children at Newbridge have all these opportunities because of the absolute commitment of the staff, and we are very sad to see three members of the team leave us. They are Miss Slee who leaves us to teach at Courtney School, Kingswood, Miss Newton who leaves to teach at Christchurch School, Bradford on Avon and Mrs Rutland who takes up a post at Farrington Gurney. In their own special way each has made their mark at Newbridge and we will miss them. It is the staff leavers’ assembly tomorrow morning and they will have a send off they deserve. Our very best wishes and gratitude goes with them.

YEAR 6 SATs UPDATE
The latest news we have in the SATs fiasco is that we will probably be sent the results at the end of this week. We will therefore post the results to all our Year 6 families at the beginning of next week. If there is a further delay we will send them to you as soon as we have the results in our hands. We feel very sorry that you have been kept waiting.

CERTIFICATES OF EXCELLENCE - JULY
At the end of every month each class teacher has a very difficult decision to face. They have to choose the one person from their class to receive a Certificate of Excellence. The person they choose has to consistently be the best that he or she can be. That could be in effort and attitude, achievement, behaviour or citizenship. Sometimes it can be very difficult deciding as all of the children at Newbridge seem to work so hard and behave so well!
The people with their names here this month deserve congratulating. It is not easy to be awarded a Certificate of Excellence and they have done extremely well.

NEWSLETTER Issue: 6.07

Next week will see the final newsletter for this year. It could well be a bumper edition! I would like to say 'thank you' to all our families and staff who supported the CLIC fundraising appeal last Friday. We had a lot of fun, raised over £500 for such a worthwhile charity and we also discovered yet more talent at Newbridge. When does it end?!
Year 6 SATs results
No doubt you have heard in the media that the administrators of both the Key Stage 2 and 3 tests have surpassed themselves this year. Papers and results, which were due to be returned to us by the deadline date of 8th July, have still not fully appeared. There are thousands of schools across the country that are in the same boat as us and voicing their disgust at what is little more than bungling incompetence. It seems the imperative to meet deadlines does not apply to both sides. Our children deserve better. As soon as all the results come in, we will send the information home with the children. We hope this is early next week.
Parental Questionnaire
Many thanks to our parents and carers who took the time to give us their views on how we are progressing. 102 questionnaires were returned with a total of 141 children represented and a copy of the statistical outcome is attached. All your comments have also been collated and this information provides us with very useful material for our development planning for the future. The questionnaire is overwhelmingly positive but there are also areas where we can do better. Last year’s questionnaire clearly pointed out the need for better communication about what the children are learning and how they are being taught and this is echoed in this year’s results. As a result of this feedback, we have reviewed our systems and made a number of changes. For one, I hope you appreciated the new style of report which included more data to back up the teachers’ comments and more of an emphasis on what each child is doing well and what they need to work on. Next year we are also introducing ‘Getting to Know You’ sessions for all the classes. These are half hour sessions, take place in the classrooms and give the opportunity to our parents to find out about the particular routines and expectations in each year. A full year’s calendar is coming out at the end of the first week back but I will give you the dates and times of these sessions now so that you can book them in the diary. They are: Tuesday 16th September 2.00pm: Year 1 and 2.30pm: Year 4, Wednesday 17th September 2.00pm:Year 2 and 2.30pm: Year 5, Thursday 18th September 2.00pm: Year 3 and 2.30pm: Year 6. Watch out too for a curriculum overview that will be sent out to you at the beginning of each term outlining what your child will be covering during that term and there will be more curriculum information evenings on their way too. Please book in the first one which is being held on Thursday 2nd October at 6.30pm. This will be about a number of changes we are making next year.
We will use this year's questionnaire in such a way to continue to move Newbridge Primary on to greater heights. I would like to express my gratitude to two of our governors, Lesley Waters and Nigel Hamilton, who burnt the midnight oil collating all this information for us. That is no mean feat.

NEWBRIDGE RUGBY HITS THE HEIGHTS!
On Saturday, the Newbridge won the BANES tag rugby championship for the second year in the row. Having qualified in style for the final a few weeks earlier, the team turned in another scintillating performance to win against Trinity School by 16 tries to 8. Several seasoned watchers remarked that this was the best rugby they had seen played at this age. The team of Max, Ellie, Sammy, Caleb, Fran, Joe, Erin, Jacob and Harrison are largely the same team as last year and remain undefeated over two years. The whole squad also deserve a mention for the quality of both attitude and play. Well done to them all. The future also looks very bright with some Year 3 & 4 children showing some deft skills at Saturday’s festival.

NEW ARRIVAL
Brandon in 2RB is delighted to have a new baby brother called Tyler. He was born on Saturday 28th June and weighed 7lbs 1oz. Congratulations to all the Davis family on their new addition!

UPPER SCHOOL FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT
Thank you to everyone who made Friday's football tournaments such a success. All the pupils showed fantastic spirit and there was a real emphasis on participation, as well as competition. They should now have received a team photo as a memento of the day and more photos are on display in school.

LOWER SCHOOL FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT
There are no pictures but the memories are enough! There were three teams in the Year 2 draw and four in the Reception / Year 1. All the girls and boys were stars and made us feel very proud. Well done to all the footballers! The support from the sidelines was magnificent and noisy. When the dust finally settled, Superstrikers came out on top in the Year 2s and Wookies did likewise in the Reception/Year 1s. A huge thank you to Matt Grosvenor for refereeing and helping to organise, to Cabi Grosvenor for organising the referees and running the table, and our team managers for getting the best out of their players. Mr Croker.

5W'S FRENCH CAFE
On Tuesday 8th July 5W held an amazing French Café in the Blue Room. In the morning we split up into groups and did some cooking. Two groups managed to make some delicious homemade bread. Some groups were decorating the Blue Room making origami flowers to go on the tables. Other groups were preparing food for the café such as fruit kebabs and strawberry milkshakes. At 11:30 the café opened. Some people were customers such as Mr Croker, Miss Simpson and Mrs Walsh. We all had to speak in French and put on our best French accents. Just as the café was ending we sang our French song in the tune of the twelve days of Christmas. We all had a great time and Mr Croker said it was the best café he had been to.

GRAND LEAVERS' PARTY
Calling all Year 6 leavers! Don’t forget it’s party time on Thursday 24th July from 5.00pm-7.30pm. This year’s party and disco should be even more exciting with food, entertainment, photos and extra surprises! There will be a £2 charge but this will include food and drink at the party as well as the disco. Letters will follow shortly. Year 5 are welcome to join in for the disco at 6.30. THANK YOU FROM THE FELIX FUND
The Open Gardens and Plant Sale arranged by residents of Audley Avenue on Sunday 22nd June was extremely well supported and, despite very gusty weather, raised a fabulous total of £700. This money will go towards the Felix Fund, a charity organised by former Newbridge teacher, Lindy Platt, who is raising money to train a doctor in Malawi.
Lindy, and ex-Newbridge teacher David Evans, thank all those who supported this event, especially those who helped with the organisation, opened their gardens or made a personal donation. You may be assured that the money will all be channelled effectively, via VSO, as and when it is needed.
Felix ended the present term by being top in his year group again. Immediate funds were sent to cover a new pair of shoes and a mobile phone for personal contact with Lindy, who knows how important an occasional text message from the UK can be.

At 11:30 the café opened. Some people were customers such as Mr Croker, Miss Simpson and Mrs Walsh. We all had to speak in French and put on our best French accents. Just as the café was ending we sang our French song in the tune of the twelve days of Christmas. We all had a great time and Mr Croker said it was the best café he had been to.

GRAND LEAVERS' PARTY
Calling all Year 6 leavers! Don’t forget it’s party time on Thursday 24th July from 5.00pm-7.30pm. This year’s party and disco should be even more exciting with food, entertainment, photos and extra surprises! There will be a £2 charge but this will include food and drink at the party as well as the disco. Letters will follow shortly. Year 5 are welcome to join in for the disco at 6.30. THANK YOU FROM THE FELIX FUND
The Open Gardens and Plant Sale arranged by residents of Audley Avenue on Sunday 22nd June was extremely well supported and, despite very gusty weather, raised a fabulous total of £700. This money will go towards the Felix Fund, a charity organised by former Newbridge teacher, Lindy Platt, who is raising money to train a doctor in Malawi.
Lindy, and ex-Newbridge teacher David Evans, thank all those who supported this event, especially those who helped with the organisation, opened their gardens or made a personal donation. You may be assured that the money will all be channelled effectively, via VSO, as and when it is needed.
Felix ended the present term by being top in his year group again. Immediate funds were sent to cover a new pair of shoes and a mobile phone for personal contact with Lindy, who knows how important an occasional text message from the UK can be.

NEWSLETTER Issue: 6.05
HEAD'S VIEW
Since my last Head's View so much has happened. The ReNewbridge celebrations, Maths Week, the Year 3 and 4 Caribbean Day, the Lower and Upper School sports days, the Bath Schools brass instrument day, the 2RB class assembly, various sporting events …………….. and this is just the tip of the iceberg. There are so many 'well dones' I want to say to the organisers of these events, to the girls and boys who make all the work so worthwhile and to our parents and families who give unstinting support. Thank you to all of you.
There are some personal 'thank yous' I would like to say…… to Mrs Phillips for organising an excellent 'Maths Week' and for doing all the spade work in creating the 'Reach for the Sun' number skills practice sheets (see display board in upper school foyer), to Victoria and Phillip Janseunne who of late have given every waking moment (and their considerable expertise) to produce a new school prospectus of which we feel very proud (see website) and to Sarah Le Butt, Judy Groves, Catherine Marlowe and Kim Noad who have been setting up our new school library with, quite literally, months of labelling, sorting, cataloguing and putting over 4000 books on the computer system. The library which will be fully open for use in September is down to their commitment.
FUND RAISING FOR CLIC
As you know, this year we have raised funds for the RUH (local), Lepra (international) and next week we are raising funds for CLIC (national). I know this will be close to many of your hearts as we will be helping children with cancer and leukaemia (Cancer and Leukaemia In Childhood). Today, in assembly, Mrs Balch (daughter Maura in Elm) introduced us to CLIC and news of a little boy she has supported through raising funds by riding her bike a very long way!
Our turn comes next Friday 11th July when we are having a mufti day and we ask you to make a contribution of £1 (or more if you are able) for the privilege. In addition, on that day we are holding a Newbridge version of 'You’ve Got Talent'. We are inviting our children to enter the competition, either as an individual or in pairs or groups. To enter we ask that you make an additional contribution of £1 (or more if you are able). The children will show their entry in their class during the day (maximum two minutes) and one will be chosen from each class to go through to a special whole school assembly later in the day. It should be fun and at the same time we are doing our bit to support such a worthy cause. Please can all money be sent in on the day in one envelope labelled with your child’s name, class and the word 'CLIC' We thank you in advance for your support. Mr Croker

Sam and Ashley Room would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for the overwhelming amount of continued support shown to our family following the head injury Elliot sustained after a fall. This was a very frightening time for the whole family. We were very grateful for the amount of cards, gifts and offers of help given to us by all the parents and teachers at Newbridge; this did make a huge difference to Elliot’s recovery, especially the huge card received from all his class.
Elliot continues to progress well and is expected to make a full recovery, which we are all grateful for. We would also like to say a special thank you to Mrs Harrison, Mrs Bateman and Mr Croker for the extra help and support they gave us, and to all those who are helping Elliot back at school and return to a normal life.

The Community Learning Service would like to invite all parents, carers and grandparents to our Summer Party on Wednesday 16th July from 9.45am-2.30pm at Bath City Football Club, High Street, Twerton. The event will include a free buffet lunch and free crèche at First Steps Nursery, Woodhouse Road, Twerton.
We will be celebrating by offering free workshops: Aromatherapy Hand Massage, Chinese Brush Painting, Ceramic Painting and we will be joined by Sue Torr MBE who will be sharing her experience of learning to read and write as an adult. Get a group together, book a table and enjoy a day out with friends - experience something new!
